During an arraignment Tuesday, Assistant Plymouth District Attorney Jessica Kelly said that Latarsha L. Sanders, 43, had stabbed her two sons as part of a voodoo ritual.
On February 6, 2018, Latarsha L. Sanders, 43, had her arraignment hearing for the murder of her two young sons. At this hearing, Sanders’ potential motive was revealed to be related to an alleged voodoo ritual.
The Brockton, Massachusetts woman is accused of killing her sons, eight-year-old Edson “Marlon” Brito and five-year-old Lason Brito, with a kitchen knife. It’s alleged she left their bodies in their home for up to two days before they were discovered Monday.
It is alleged that Sanders said she needed to kill someone in a voodoo ritual in order to get a human heart to give to her dying father. Prosecutors say she stabbed Edson 50 times before turning on Lason, after the death of her older son failed to complete the ritual.
“It came out ‘wrong’ with the first one and for that reason she had to move on to the second child,” Assistant Plymouth District Attorney Jessica Kenny said.
The bodies of Edson and Lason were found in separate rooms in the family’s apartment on Prospect Street after Sanders asked a neighbor to call an ambulance. After emergency personnel arrived and Sanders was taken to hospital, Lason was found under a blanket with his neck bandaged and face slashed. Edson’s head and torso were covered with sheets.
Sanders has admitted to stabbing Edson in the kitchen. She doesn’t remember how many times she stabbed Lason.
Earline Sanders, Latarsha Sanders’ mother, and the last person to see her two grandkids alive other than their alleged killer, told police her daughter was “mentally unstable and crazy.” She went on to say that her daughter had become obsessed over the last couple year with the Illuminati, a secret society.
In addition to the Illuminati, Latarsha was also interested in rituals, numerology, and sacrifices. She may also have been a little paranoid; she allegedly spied on her neighbors using a baby monitor.
Earline Sanders said her daughter visited her on Monday, an hour before asking a neighbor for an ambulance, “but made no mention of the two children she had stabbed in her home.” She also told investigators that her daughter “was acting strangely.”
Latarsha Sanders has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bond.
