Wichita Authorities on the Hunt for 5-Year-Old Lucas Hernandez

Wichita police and the FBI are on high alert for a missing five-year-old Kansas boy named Lucas Hernandez, who was last seen Saturday. Here’s the latest update on the search for the Wichita boy.

Wichita Police, with the assistance of the FBI, are currently on the hunt for a missing Kansas boy, who disappeared on Saturday, February 18, 2018. Lucas Hernandez is five years old.

According to police, Lucas was last seen by his stepmother around 3 p.m. before she showered and took a nap. He was in his room at their southeast Wichita home.

The Search for Lucas Hernandez

The search for Hernandez first started around the perimeter of his home. Later, the efforts expanded to the neighborhood, two parks in northeast Wichita, and one in southeast Wichita. They have performed organized grid searches, using canine and mounted units as well as a drone.

No evidence has been reported as being found in the initial search efforts. The investigators have more than 100 people working on the case, answering tips, following up on leads, and assisting in physical searches.

According to police, it did not seem to be an abduction, therefore no Amber Alert was issued to inform the public.

Instead, the Wichita Police activated its Emergency Operation Command Center. And the FBI got involved by having its team of Child Action Rapid Deployment assisting in the search efforts.

Officer Charley Davidson was quoted as saying “We are going to be there as long as it takes,” and he added, “Right now, our concern is to find Lucas.”

Reactions to Lucas Hernandez Being Missing

Kristin Edson, the stepmother’s cousin, told KAKE that Lucas’ father and stepmother are heartbroken. She added that they are, “Very distraught. Very upset. Devastated. I mean, can you imagine?” She also said, “It’s cold out. We don’t know where he’s at.”

“It was devastating. You’re hollering his name up and down the street. Telling him it’s OK to come out. It’s very hard to do. You never think it would happen to you until it happens and you just pray it never does,” Edson said, when reflecting on her own personal thoughts about the entire situation.

A teacher at Wichita Beech Elementary School posted, “He is one of my students and a very sweet little boy,” which was posted on Facebook. In addition she wrote, “Please pray for him and his family. My heart is so heavy right now.”

In the past there were concerns from close family members for the safety of young Lucas. Just last year, Lucas’s aunt reported some alleged concerns to the Kansas Department of Children and Families. There were no details of an incident or the concerns that were reported.

Police Call for Public’s Help

Lucas Hernandez is described as weighing approximately 60 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black sweat pants, a grey shirt with a bear on it, and white socks. He may not be wearing shoes.
