The hunt for Terry May, a Florida man accused of beating a young girl and putting her in a heated oven, has ended now that he’s surrendered to authorities.
Terry May, 45, turned himself in at the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office on January 25, 2018. May is accused of committing horrific acts of child abuse against his ex-girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter.
According to the sheriff’s office, May allegedly beat the girl repeatedly with a belt. He’s also accused of putting the child in a hot oven.
She suffered from several noticeable injuries, including an extensive abrasion on her ear, several contusions and swelling on the top of her head and forehead, a six-inch scar on her back, and abrasions and lacerations on her feet, hands and leg.
The mother left the child in May’s care for two weeks. When the child was returned to her, the mother noticed the injuries and immediately called police.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said, “It just boggles my mind you would torment and beat and place a kid in the oven and yet you walk around on two feet. Animals don’t treat their kids the way this guy treated this little girl.”
Terry May’s Family Disputes Allegations
While the police seem sure that they’ve got their man, May’s family is standing by him. His relatives argue that someone else must have abused the child.
May’s mother told Florida’s Fox35 that her son loves the child. “When she was a newborn baby he took care of her,” she said. “He brought her clothes, Pampers, everything.”
But the police disagree, saying that the child told authorities May “frequently” hit her with a belt.
Currently, Terry May is being held on $50,000 bond on one charge of child abuse. The Florida Department of Children and Families is also investigating.
