A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy and a suspect in a home burglary are dead and a third man is on the run after a burglary attempt gone wrong.
Shots Fired after Suspected Home Invasion
A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy responded to a 911 call reporting a home invasion in Fredrickson, Washington on January 7, 2018. The call was made at 11:25 p.m. and the dispatcher reported hearing screaming and the sounds of a scuffle.
At approximately 11:31, Deputy Daniel A. McCartney arrived on the scene. What happened next has not been fully determined, but what we do know is that McCartney gave chase to two suspects.
At approximately 11:34, shots were fired. When backup arrived, McCartney was found breathing but in life-threatening condition. One of the suspects was found dead next to a handgun.
McCartney, 34, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 2:00 a.m.
Manhunt on for Second Suspect
McCartney’s death has triggered a massive manhunt for the other suspect in this case.
Details on the suspect are scarce, but he is believed to be white or mixed race and tall with a thin build. He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.
A Fallen Officer
McCartney was hired in 2014 after working in Hoquiam, Washington and spending some time in the United States Navy. He was married with three young sons.
Sheriff Paul Pastor said of McCartney, “He is a young deputy who signed up to watch over other people. He had an ethic in his heart for doing something for other people.”
While his community and peers mourn his death, the search for McCartney’s possible killer continues. Anyone who has any information that may help officers in this case should contact the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department tip line at 1-855-798-8477.
