New York Student Haley Anderson Found Dead, Accused Fled the Country

Officials are now on the hunt for a person of interest after a student at Binghamton University in New York was discovered dead on Friday. Here is what you need to know about the case.

A senior nursing student Haley Anderson of Binghamton University was found dead in a home on Oak Street in Binghamton. She was scheduled to graduate this May. Officials found her body while responding to a request for a welfare check just before 1:00 p.m. on Friday (March 9).

A person of interest is reportedly a male nursing student who is said to have been in a romantic relationship with Anderson. He left the country on an international flight before officials discovered her body. At this time, the male suspect’s location is unknown. Officials have not disclosed the person of interest’s name.

On Friday afternoon, crime scene tape was put near the Oak Street residence where Anderson’s body was found. Broome County property records state that it is a two-family home.

Officials also spoke to neighbors to see if they can learn more about the case.

At this time, Anderson’s cause of death was ruled a homicide. Her autopsy was done on Saturday at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton.

Before Anderson started college, she worked at Ralph’s Italian Ices, where she was a manager at the time of her death. The store is located very close to her house. Her younger sister also worked at the ice cream store.

Anderson’s Facebook page states that she was from Westbury, New York and attended W.T. Clarke High School. Though it looks like she was in a relationship in 2016, details of the person are unknown. At her time of death, Anderson appeared to be single.

As another source of income, Anderson also started working at Jazzman’s Café on the BU campus in January 2016. Her co-worker, Athena Anadnostakos worked with her for several years and said, “She was a very good girl. She was friendly, joked around, we had a good time together.”

The last time Anadnostakos saw Anderson was on Thursday.

Anadnostakos added, “Everybody’s sad. A lot of students came who work together, they cried today. The supervisor and Haley were so close. We are very sad.”

Anderson’s LinkedIn profile lists her as a teacher’s assistant for almost four years. In 2017, she received her bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Binghamton. She also studied at Decker School of Nursing.

Those who knew Anderson remember her as somebody with an infectious smile and positive attitude. Several of her friends and acquaintances took to social media with condolence messages.

Binghamton University also shared their sympathies with a Facebook post.

A funeral fund was started by Mishela Topalli. The goal was to raise $15,000. Currently, that amount has been exceeded with $19,828 donated for Anderson’s family to cover the funeral expenses.

Currently, Binghamton authorities are still investigating the case, with the assistance of the Broome County District Attorney’s Office, New York State University Police at Binghamton, FBI, Port Authority Police Department of New York/ New Jersey, and the Nassau County Police Department.
