Who Is James Eric Davis, Jr., Suspected Central Michigan University Shooter?

Who is James Eric Davis, Jr.? Police allege that Davis, a sophomore at Central Michigan University (CMU), shot and killed his parents on March 2, 2018 at a dorm when they came to pick him up for spring break.

Authorities are looking for 19-year-old James Eric Davis, Jr., who was last seen running from the Central Michigan University campus after the alleged shooting of his parents on Friday morning. Who is Davis, Jr. and what was the motive for the shooting?

Central Michigan University Shooting Suspect

The two people shot and killed in a dorm room on the Mount Pleasant campus of CMU have been confirmed as the parents of James Eric Davis, Jr. Police previously named Davis, Jr. a person of interest.

The shooting took place around 8:30 a.m. on March 2 on the fourth floor of Campbell Hall. Surveillance cameras captured Davis running out the north doors of the residence and onto nearby railroad tracks.


Police still have Central Michigan University on lockdown while they search for Davis, Jr. Since it’s the beginning of spring break, parents looking to pick up students have been advised to stay away from the CMU campus.

CMU also told students to take shelter in a Facebook post shortly after the shooting.

Who Is James Eric Davis, Jr.?

A sophomore at CMU, Davis graduated from Plainfield Central High School in Plainfield, Illinois, in 2016. He was a point guard on his high school basketball team.  The 19-year-old is described by friends as being quiet and polite.

Davis’ father, 48-year-old James E. Davis Sr., was a part-time police officer in the village of Bellwood, a community 14 miles west of Chicago. The suspect’s mother was Diva Davis, 47 years old. Davis Jr. has an older brother and a younger sister.

The Davis family is from Chicago.

According to a high school acquaintance of Davis Jr., Deantre DeYoung, he was “a smart kid. He went to school for academics. He wasn’t there to mess around.”

Steve Lamberti, who once coached the boy’s basketball team at Davis’ high school, said that the suspected shooter was “a typical high school kid…. No problems at all.”

A scan of Davis, Jr.’s Twitter feed shows a love of rap music, like Young Dolph, and an avid interest in basketball. He also took a trip to Chicago on February 19, taking photos of the city at night. Typical university student stuff.

Police Still Looking for Davis, Jr.

Davis, Jr. is described as a 19-year-old black man, about 5’10” with a slight build and short hair. He was last seen wearing yellow jeans and a blue hoodie. At the moment, he is considered armed and dangerous.

After the shooting, Davis, Jr. fled the university, but police believe he is still within city limits.

Officers are not sure what the suspect is wearing now since several items of clothing were found discarded along a set of railroad tracks near the scene.

Mount Pleasant police and Central Michigan University confirmed that they had contact with Davis, Jr. on the night of March 1 for a drug-related incident and medical situation. He was taken to McLaren-Mt. Pleasant hospital and released the next morning.

It’s unknown yet if there’s a connection between his hospitalization and the shooting of his parents, or what his motive may have been.
