Imran Ali, 24, has been arrested in Pakistan in connection with the rape and murder of Zainab Ansari, 7. But police believe there may be eight more victims; local residents believe there may be as many as 12.
For the past year, parents in the Pakistani city of Kasur were gripped by fear. Police are alleging that Imran Ali took young girls from the city’s streets and raped them. One of the children survived her attack, but the others were murdered.
By the time seven-year-old Zainab Ansari’s body was found on a garbage heap in January 2018, the number of possible victims had reached 12. Tensions were running high, with locals demanding answers and politicians demanding that police find the killer.
DNA Evidence Points to Imran Ali
According to a Punjab government spokesman, DNA evidence found on Ansari’s body matched the evidence found on eight other victims. It also led police to the man they say is the killer.
Imran Ali was subsequently arrested for the rape and murder of Ansari. Ali, a resident of Kasur, lived near Ansari’s residence.
The Right Suspect?
Many will be watching this story very closely as the possibility of a suspect being railroaded for a crime is very real.
For the past year, police were under immense pressure to bring in the killer. In fact, according to the BBC, they already had a man in custody for the murder of another young girl. And that man is now dead.
A man known only as Mudasir, 21, was arrested for the rape and murder of five-year-old Iman Fatima. DNA evidence now suggests that Mudasir was not involved in the crime. Tests revealed that Fatima was killed by the same man who murdered Ansari.
This news is likely to bring little solace to Mudasir’s family as he was shot to death by police while reportedly trying to escape.
