Florida High School Shooting Conspiracies: Speculations Surface Even As People Recover

While a lot of people are mourning the losses of their loved ones, investigators are searching for answers as to why the Florida shooting happened. The February 14 school shooting brought forth a lot of conspiracies and rumors immediately after the news broke. Read on to find out about the Florida high school shooting conspiracies.

The aftermath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida saw the death of several people. It also gave rise to several rumors and theories.

Nikolas Cruz, who shot 17 people to death, is currently in the custody of the police. An investigation on him and the mass shooting has already begun.

Some of the conspiracy theories that are floating on the Internet about the suspect are compiled below.

Florida Shooter Was a Member of White Nationalist Militia

Jordan Jereb, the leader of a white nationalist militia called the Republic of Florida, told the Anti-Defamation League that Cruz took part in paramilitary drills in Tallahassee.

Jereb said he had spoken to Cruz once a few years ago. This group wants Florida to become a white ethno-state. However, neither the Southern Poverty Law Center nor the Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Tallahassee could confirm any connection between the militia and Cruz.

On Thursday, Jereb seemed to back away from his claim saying that there was a “misunderstanding” and that he had received some conflicting information.

FBI Knew about Florida Shooter

Another conspiracy states that the FBI looked into a YouTube comment posted in 2017 which read, “I’m going to be a professional school shooter.” by someone with the name of Nikolas Cruz.

FBI agent Robert Lasky said that they had investigated it but could not find out who made the comment on the video.

It was made on a YouTube video of a blogger from Mississippi who goes by the name Ben Bennight. Bennight claims that he contacted the FBI and they spoke to him back when he first saw the comment. The FBI agents called him again on Wednesday after the Florida shooting.

Bennight said, “They came to my office the next morning and asked me if I knew anything about the person. I didn’t. They took a copy of the screenshot and that was the last I heard from them.”

Florida Shooter is a DACA Recipient

One more theory that has surfaced on the Internet is that Nikolas Cruz is a DACA recipient. Immediately after the suspect shooter’s name was made public, social media users started spreading rumors that Cruz is an undocumented DACA recipient.

DACA stands for The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows people who are brought into the U.S. as young kids temporary permits to live in the U.S. legally.

The rumor, however, is false because Cruz was adopted at birth by a couple with the surname Cruz, and he is not undocumented.

Florida Shooter Bought the Gun Legally

Authorities on Thursday revealed that the gun Cruz used during the attack was purchased by him a year ago. It is a variant of the AR-15 style rifle.

Reportedly, Cruz bought the rifle in February 2017. Federal law prevalent in Florida lets people who are 18 years of age and older to purchase guns legally. Since Cruz had no criminal records, he could easily clear a background check.

After the mass shooting, people are wondering whether they missed the signs about Nikolas Cruz and if they could have, in any way, prevented the shooting from happening.
