Detroit Uber Driver Killed in Shooting

A Detroit Uber driver was killed on Sunday on the west side of the city. The young victim was shot in what appeared to be a targeted incident.

A driver for popular taxi and delivery service Uber was fatally shot in Detroit on Sunday night, according to police. The victim, a male between the ages of 25 and 27, was shot several times while working on the city’s west side.

The shooting occurred at around 7:40 p.m. on February 4, 2018, on the 1500 block of Coyle Street, near Greenfield Road and Fenkell Avenue, according to the Detroit Free Press. A woman, who had called for an Uber to go pick up food, told police that she had gotten into the car when a pickup truck pulled up next to the Uber. This was when the driver of the Uber exited the vehicle and began running.

The suspect in the shooting also exited his vehicle, and fired multiple shots. Following this, the suspect returned to his pickup truck and left in an unknown direction.

No further details are known at this time. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

This is not the first time that an Uber driver has been murdered in Detroit: in March 2016, a shooting in Detroit claimed the life of Uber driver Modou Diagne. The Free Press reported that Dajuan Watson was charged with felony murder and armed robbery, among other charges.
