Charles Manson was the self-styled leader of a quasi-commune called the Manson Family that arose in California in the late 1960s. Manson’s followers murdered at least nine people at four different locations in July and August 1969.
The Manson Family’s most famous victim, Tate, was eight-and-a-half months pregnant and pleaded with them to spare the life of her unborn child. However, they ignored her pleas and stabbed her multiple times .
In 1971, Manson was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the death of seven people, including Tate. Manson was originally sentenced to death, but when California invalidated the death penalty statute, he received a life sentence instead. He was serving out his sentence at the California State Prison in Corcoran at the time of his death.
History Should Never Be Repeated
A statement was released by the Association of Deputy District Attorneys of California on November 20, which said: “Manson was an evil, sophisticated con man with twisted and warped moral values. Manson’s victims are the ones who should be remembered and mourned on the occasion of his death.”
Manson had been behind bars for more than four decades after his arrest in 1969. With his death, a brutal and bloody chapter in American history came to an end, and it may bring some closure to the families of his victims.
Charles Manson’s death means different things to different people—after all, some people loved him—but one thing is for sure: nobody wants a repeat of what happened on those fateful days and nights in 1969.
