In East Ridge, Tennessee, residents are reeling from a double murder where the alleged murderer escaped, and then posted a lengthy note on Facebook about why he did it.
We have the latest on the hunt for Casey Lawhorn, and what he allegedly wrote on Facebook about the murders.
Alleged Murderer Calls Police
Around 5:00 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, April 8, East Ridge police responded to a call about a double murder. The bizarre part of the affair was the fact that the caller, 23-year-old Casey Lawhorn, claimed to be the one who carried out the executions.
When police arrived, they discovered the bodies of Lawhorn’s mother, Vi Lawhorn, and his friend, 22-year-old Avery Gaines. Both were shot to death.
Casey Lawhorn already disappeared. But, his 911 call was not the last the world heard from Lawhorn.
A Chilling Facebook Post
As police searched for Casey Lawhorn, an interesting development occurred. A post appeared on his Facebook page, reportedly written by Lawhorn, describing in chilling detail how he allegedly went about killing his friend and his mother.
According to the Facebook post, Lawhorn came home after picking up his mother from a local bar shortly after 1:00 a.m. Gaines was already in the Lawhorn home, having come over earlier to play the Magic: The Gathering card game with Casey.
After picking up his mother (whom he claims was drunk), Lawhorn allegedly went into his room and grabbed a stolen .22 long rifle. He paced around for a bit, and then made up his mind. He walked into the room where Gaines slept, and shot him in the head.
The post then alleged that he went into his mother’s room and attempted to shoot her, but the gun jammed. In her drunken state, Vi Lawhorn didn’t even notice what her son attempted to do.
After he fixed the jam, Lawhorn returned, and this time, achieved his goal. The post claims that he pumped two shots into his mother, but didn’t kill her yet. She screamed at her son, asking why he shot her, as his gun jammed a second time.
Casey fixed the jam, ending the life of his mother with two more bullets. He hoped that she wouldn’t suffer, nor would she ever know who killed her. But in the end, it couldn’t be helped.
He went back to Gaines and stole heroin and money that his friend allegedly had on him. According to the Facebook post, the entire incident occurred with a span of three or four minutes.
The rest of the post alludes to the idea that Lawhorn was contemplating suicide for a long time. Now, with the murders, it was pretty much enviable. The post ended with Lawhorn asking everyone to help his brother, who he feels will be the most affected by the situation, and with a cold and frightening line:
“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about murder, wondering what it feels like. But I’ve barely felt anything.”
Not much is currently known about Vi Lawhorn. Her Facebook page reveals very little about her, other than some linked posts and casual pictures and videos. Neighbors described her as a “sweetheart, nice, cordial.”
Avery Gaines’ profile shows him as a politically active young man, with photos of him and a man who appears to be Casey Lawhorn at a march for equality. His current occupation is listed as being at an Amazon fulfillment center.
A Quick Casey Lawhorn Wiki
Casey James Lawhorn’s Facebook page seems a little odd for an alleged killer. There are some selfies but, for the most part, a lot of memes and pictures of nerdy things; Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Rick and Morty, and anime. Interestingly, it lists his last job at the same Amazon fulfillment center as Gaines.
His musical tastes seem typical for a man of Lawhorn’s age; Taylor Swift, Eminem, Linkin Park, Katy Perry, and Bullet for My Valentine. His favorite films include Star Wars and The Hobbit.
In terms of his mental state, the large Facebook post mentioned that he felt as though he was on a tragic course, and considered suicide since he attended Middle Tennessee State University.
Where Is Casey Lawhorn Now?
The big question is, where is Casey Lawhorn now? As of this writing, he has yet to be found. The lengthy Facebook post that spoke of his murders does mention that his car broke down on the side of I-59 in Mississippi. And sure enough, the car was found in Mississippi along the side of I-59, but with no sign of Lawhorn. Jasper County police are currently searching the area as they suspect that Lawhorn didn’t go far.
Police are presuming that Lawhorn is armed and dangerous, and should not be approached by the general public. He is described as a white male, 5’5″, and approximately 108 pounds. If you see him, you are asked to call the Jasper County Sheriff’s department at 601-764-2588.
