Burke County Sheriff Deputy Resigns after Being Arrested for DUI

At approximately 2:00 a.m. Monday, March 5, Sergeant Vonshay Felton of the Burke County Sheriff’s department was involved in a traffic accident. This morning, he resigned from his position with the Sheriff’s department. What happened in the traffic accident to cause Sergeant Felton to resign? We have the latest on this interesting story.

DUI Stops a Career

Sergeant Felton was involved in a single car accident at approximately 2:00 a.m. in Richmond County near Riverwatch and I-20. Felton was immediately charged with driving under the influence. In accordance with Burke County Sheriff’s Office Policy, Felton is to be investigated for his arrest by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council for investigation. In a statement, Chief Deputy Lewis Blanchard said the following:

“Sergeant Felton has had nothing but an exemplary record, however, there are some incidents that even years of great work cannot negate. The policy of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office is to conduct an investigation on any employee that is cited or arrested regardless of location. Any Deputy found guilty of DUI would be terminated.”


Felton apparently apologized to the Sheriff’s Office and its staff for his actions, as well as any embarrassment he may have caused. After his apology, he resigned from his position.
