Brooklyn Car Crash: Witnesses Question Dorothy Bruns’ Medical Claim

A horrific traffic accident allegedly caused by the driver’s seizure cost the lives of two children and sent two adults to the hospital. But witnesses have come forward disputing the driver’s claim.

What happened? Was it a seizure as the driver claims, or was it something else?

The Story as of Yesterday

Yesterday afternoon, at approximately 12:40 p.m. near the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, a Volvo seemingly went out of control and ran through the intersection at Ninth Street and Fifth Avenue.

Driving through the intersection, the Volvo ran down two children; one-year-old Joshua Lew, and four-year-old Abigail Blumenstein, along with Joshua’s mother Lauren Lew, and Abigail’s mother, Tony Award-winning actor Ruthie Ann Miles. It was reported by New York’s WPIX 11 that Miles was pregnant at the time of the crash.

The Volvo reportedly dragged the baby carriage that held Joshua Lew until the car hit a set of parked cars and came to a stop. The driver, 44-year-old Dorothy Bruns, did not attempt to flee the scene. According to Bruns, she suffered a seizure and lost not only control of herself, but of the car as well. However, witnesses are now coming forth claiming they saw something a little different.

What Some Witnesses Saw

Less than 24 hours later, a few witnesses have come forward that say that what they saw didn’t look like a woman who had a seizure.

28-year-old Jennifer Muñiz, who saw the aftermath of the incident told the New York Daily News that what she saw didn’t seem like someone coming out of a seizure. She described the scene of the EMT getting Bruns out of her car.

“When they took her out, she was just standing there, like nothing. No emotion. Not sad. Not crying. Not asking questions: ‘Is everybody all right?’ Not shaking. Nothing.”

According to Muñiz, as the EMT sat Bruns on to a stretcher, they checked her for injuries and then handed over her purse and phone.

“She was texting on her cell phone like nothing happened, Muñiz said. “Like she had just parked the car.”

Other witnesses to the event claim that it looked like the car was actually accelerating after hitting the victims.

Bruns’ Past Traffic Incidents and the Intersection

There is also the fact that Bruns has a past of traffic incidents. Most recently, Brun has been cited at least four times in the past two years for running red lights. While it is unknown if she was the driver, the car she was driving has been ticketed at least four times in the past two years for speeding in school zones.

At the same time, the intersection itself has a history of accidents that spans years. In 2016, a pedestrian was struck and killed in the intersection.

Currently, Dorothy Bruns has not been charged with any crimes, and the investigation is still ongoing.
