Woman’s Dismembered Body in Japan Linked to American Suspect

The mystery behind the dismembered body of a Japanese woman found in multiple locations in Japan has been partially solved. An American suspect in the case was caught. Here’s everything we know so far.

On February 25, 2018, the dismembered body parts of a Japanese woman turned up in two different cities in Japan. Officials said they found her torso, legs, and arms in three locations in parts of Kyoto and Osaka. Later, her head was reportedly found in a suitcase in an Osaka apartment.

Very little is publicly known about the victim. Her name was Saki Kondo. Media in Japan have reported that she was a 27-year-old office worker from Sanda City. Kondo’s family reported her missing on February 16.

Media reports also claim the room where the head was found had been rented out by an American, who returned home to the U.S. shortly after the woman had been murdered.

Suspect Arrested in New York

Kondo reportedly told friends in mid-February that she was meeting with an American man she first encountered on a dating app. The last time she was seen alive was on security footage, walking with a man believed to be the suspect.

She was seen entering the building, but the footage never showed her leaving. The American suspect, however, was seen leaving the building with a suitcase.

26-year-old Yevgeniy Vasilievich Bayraktar has been arrested for the murder in New York.

Bayraktar, who is originally from the Ukraine, moved to the United States with his mother when he was nine. At the time of his arrest, he was living with his mother and stepfather in Mastic Beach, New York.

According to The Japan Times, Bayraktar went on several other dates while in Japan. But as of writing, all of those women are safe and accounted for.

Bayraktar has been cooperative with police. He is reportedly the person who gave Japanese officials the information that allowed them to find Kondo’s legs and arms.

Despite Japan’s generally low rate of crime, especially when it comes to violent murders, this grisly killing is the second such case in Japan within the last 12 months. Takahiro Shiraishi was arrested in November for the murder and dismemberment of at least nine people.
