Investigation on for Carjacking Suspect
The Winter Garden Police Department is reportedly looking for an armed suspect who committed a series of crimes on Sunday evening. The first of these crimes occurred in the 13000 block of West Colonial Drive.
Lt. Anthony Dawkins with the Winter Garden Police Department said that an unidentified man was using the drive-thru ATM at SunTrust bank after 6:30 p.m. The suspect, who police haven’t identified, approached him.
“He brandished a handgun and we don’t quite know if there were any words exchanged at this time,” said Dawkins.
The injured victim was able to drive himself to a Wawa convenience store across the street, where he received help for his gunshot wound. Dawkins said the victim was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and his condition is stable.
Minutes after the ATM shooting, a carjacking was reported less than quarter of a mile away from the first scene. Police believe it was the same assailant who shot the man at the drive-thru ATM.
The second unidentified victim was reportedly carjacked at a Walgreens parking lot in the same block on Colonial Drive. The suspect made away with a white 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
No injuries were reported from the second scene. Investigators haven’t recovered the firearm used to commit both crimes. A piece of clothing, believed to be the suspect’s, was found at the carjacking scene.
Police have yet to identify the person responsible for both crimes. “All we have at this point is [that] he was wearing dark clothing — possibly a black hoodie,” said Dawkins.
The latest reports from the scene say that police have blocked off part of the Walgreens parking lot. Investigators are looking for a video or any clue that will help catch the suspect.
Officers have warned people to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings when they go to an ATM. “If you see someone walking in the area and you don’t feel comfortable, just keep driving and go to another one,” Dawkins advised.
Authorities requested that anyone with information of this incident to contact the Winter Garden Police Department.
