Alex Johnson & Luna Almaz: Couple Who Had Threesome with Ivana Smit Shortly before She Died

As the mystery of model Ivana Smit’s death seems to take twists and turns, the spotlight continues to shine on the couple who last saw her alive, Alex Johnson and Luna Almaz. But who are they and what was their relationship with Ivana Smit? Moreover, what has the August 2018 inquest into Smit’s death revealed? Most importantly, despite a subpoena to attend, why did the couple go into hiding?

This is a look at the cryptocurrency entrepreneur and his educator wife, and what happened before Ivana Smit plunged to her death in Kuala Lumpur.

The Up-and-Coming Couple

Before Smit’s death, Alex Johnson and his wife, Luna Almaz, were part of high society in Kuala Lumpur, but not necessarily well known.

44-year-old Alex Johnson was born in the United States but has been living in Malaysia for over a decade. He is the co-founder of a company called Everus. The company recently launched its own bitcoin, and are working on an app that will help users follow and trade in cryptocurrencies.

31-year-old Luna Almaz came from a slightly different world. Born in Kazakhstan, her father was a lawyer and she was educated in England at Staffordshire University. While she dabbled in modeling, Almaz reportedly works in education now.

The couple met in 2010 and have a four-year-old daughter.

“Progressive Marriage” and Relationship with Smit

Questions in regards to Smit’s relationship with Johnson and Almaz began to arise almost immediately after her death. What was she doing in the hotel room with the couple in the first place? An independent autopsy was performed on Smit’s body and allegedly discovered the presence of male DNA.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, the couple categorize their marriage as “progressive.” In this case, meaning that they occasionally bring in a third party to bed with them.

Johnson and Almaz claim to have met Smit around Halloween 2017, and that there was an immediate attraction between Almaz and Smit. While the couple say that most of their previous relationships of this type tended to be brief, with Smit, it ended up lasting for a number of weeks.

Johnson, Almaz, and Smit used WhatsApp to have direct messaging with one another, and had relations on a few occasions, including November 4, 2017. Johnson and Almaz stated that they thought Smit was 26, not 18.

Were They Involved in Smit’s Death?

It must be made clear, currently, there are no charges against either Johnson or Almaz in relation to Smit’s death. But due to certain pieces of information coming to light, allegations against Johnson and Almaz persist.

One of the most common questions is the matter of the state Smit was in when she fell to her death. Toxicology reports have high levels of a number of drugs and alcohol in Smit’s system, and CCTV footage shows her being unable to walk after leaving the club with Johnson and Almaz on December 6, 2017.

However, there is footage on cameras that later capture Smit being able to walk on her own by the time the threesome reached the CapSquare Residences, where Johnson and Almaz lived. They arrived at the apartment at approximately 5:44 a.m. At around 8:00 a.m., Almaz took her daughter to school. When she returned at 8:15 a.m., she and Smit began to talk and eventually, the threesome began to engage in sex.

Afterward, Almaz and Johnson went to sleep. Almaz says that at approximately 10:15 a.m., she awoke to find Smit wandering the lounge area of the apartment, talking to herself and giggling. After that, she went back to sleep and did not wake again until 1:25 p.m. At that point, Smit disappeared.

Almaz just assumed that she went to a modeling shoot she previously spoke about. It wasn’t until 5:00 p.m. that she discovered what occurred, when police arrived at the couple’s door to ask about the dead girl several floors down.

The Aftermath

Johnson and Almaz were initially arrested right away, but released without charges not too long afterward. Despite being cleared in Malaysia, the couple is still under suspicion elsewhere.

After an independent Dutch coroner discovered bruises on Smit’s arms, her family hired a private detective and a lawyer to look further into the matter. According to the detective, in other parts of the world, Smit’s death would still be treated as a homicide.

Due to the controversy, Johnson and Almaz have been getting numerous death threats. Opening up about their marriage to the Daily Mail seemed like the only way to maybe reduce those threats, and tell their side of the story.

Inquest Begins into Death of Ivana Smit

On August 8, 2018, an inquest into the mysterious death of Ivana Smit began in Kuala Lumpur. The coroner, public prosecutor, special counsel, and representatives from the Netherlands Embassy visited the condominium where Smit’s body was discovered.

The group arrived at the CapSquare condo in the Dang Wangi neighborhood of Kuala Lumpur in the early afternoon and reportedly spent around 90 minutes looking over the area, including the sixth floor, where her body was found, and the 20th floor, where she spend time with Alex Johnson and Luna Almaz.

Building Manager Testifies She Heard Strange Noises

Vanessa Nayar, 34, told the inquest that she heard noises coming from the unit where Smit was staying and “felt someone was inside” the 20th-floor  unit.

“The police accompanied me from the sixth floor at around 3:00 p.m. We rang the bell and knocked on the door of the 20th-floor  apartment, but no one answered. But I thought I heard a noise, something inside,” said Nayar, who is also the building’s manager.

“So I told the police that I wanted to call Alex Johnson and Luna Almaz, the couple staying in that unit. Then, I went downstairs to my office and called them—we have their numbers in our records there,” she added.

“One phone was ringing, but the other—I can’t remember whose number it was—was not reachable. Later, I went to check the records of their access cards to see if they had used the lifts that day,” Nayar told the inquest.

Nayar had previously said she went to a sixth-floor unit just before 2:30 p.m. on December 7, after she was told a body had been found there. She immediately called police and her superiors.

Both Nayar and a technician say they saw a pair of legs sticking out on the balcony of the sixth-floor condo. The body was covered in debris and plastic.

Unlikely Alex and Luna Johnson Will Testify

Alex and Luna Johnson, the American-Kazakh couple who hosted the Dutch model and reportedly last saw her alive, were not going to testify in the inquest. Their lawyer, GM Tan, was overheard telling deputy public prosecutor N Joy Joth, that they were expected to testify but, unfortunately, would not be, because he did not know where they were.

He said he was in contact with them through WhatsApp, but didn’t know their exact location. When confronted by the media, Tan said he could neither confirm nor deny the rumors because he had strict instructions not to speak to the press.

But, he added, he would clarify things in court the following day (August 15, 2018).

GM Tan Booted out of Courtroom

GM Tan was given walking orders after his clients failed/refused to show up for the inquest.

Coroner Mahyon Talib ordered Tan to leave the courtroom, saying there was no reason for him to be there if his clients were going to be no-shows. This despite being subpoenaed by the prosecution.

Mahyon refused to accept a letter from Alex and Luna Johnson explaining why they could not make it to the inquest. Tan declined to say whether or not they would testify at all during the eight-day inquest.

SN Nair, a lawyer holding a watching brief for Ivana Smit’s family, said it was imperative that they attend the inquest since they were the last people to see her before her death.

“It is very irresponsible of them not to come today, but to engage a watching brief lawyer to attend on their behalf.

“Their absence only creates more suspicion in this case, and they now risk being the prime suspects in Smit’s death,” he said.

This is especially true when you consider the Johnsons gave an exclusive interview to the UK’s Daily Mail.

“They must take the stand. If they are not going to testify, then their lawyer has no business here. He is sitting behind me here and making me uncomfortable,” Nair said.

Maid Tells Inquest Couple Was Planning to Return to the U.S.

The maid didn’t do it, but it looks as though Alex and Luna’s maid could provide some valuable insight on her employers during the inquest. She testified that a few days after Smit’s death, she realized that money was missing from the Johnson’s condo.

Nur Maisara Makha Abdullah, the maid hired by the Johnsons, claimed money that had been previously hidden, disappeared.

Earlier, Makha testified she made arrangements to take Alex and Luna’s five-year-old daughter to her own home after Smit’s nude body was discovered as it was “no longer safe” with police coming by.

She also claims that at around 8:00 p.m. on December 7, Luna called asking her to clean the condo, in particular, a broken bottle of alcohol in the living room. She said this was odd since she rarely found broken glass in the condo. Interestingly, the condo was stocked with the same kind of alcohol.

Unbeknownst to Makha, she may have been cleaning up a crime scene. Makha confessed to police that she had thrown the glass away and emptied the rubbish before they arrived.

Not long afterwards, Makha saw the couple packing their bags and telling her they were leaving.

“They didn’t say where they were going and I didn’t want to ask either. They gave me my last salary and said they may be going to the U.S.,” she said.
