A night out with friends ended in horror for a woman in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when a man she met that night assaulted her in her own house. Adnan Pehlivan, owner of the restaurant Istanbul Sofra, is now accused of sexual assault. Police are still investigating this case.
Ever since Istanbul Sofra opened on April 21, 2014, in Regent Square in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it has steadily become popular with residents, who enjoyed the Turkish food it offered.
Sofra means “table” in Turkish, and the restaurant served authentic Turkish dishes.
Istanbul Sofra also became famous for the ambition and hospitality of its owner, Adnan Pehlivan, 46. He came to the U.S. in 1995 and worked with cruise lines, the Hilton, and a few other hotels along the East Coast for the next 20 years. He then went back to Turkey for two years to handle operations at the Adana Hilton before moving back to Pittsburgh to open Istanbul Sofra.
In 2016 he said, “I chose Pittsburgh because it is one of the fastest-growing cities. After all of the steel factories shutting down, I saw a lot of potential in the city. There are lots of headquarters and big-time industries coming here.“
A Chance Meeting
Fast forward to Tuesday, May 15, 2018, the restaurant and its owner made headlines, after Pehlivan was accused of sexually assaulting a woman he reportedly met at a bar on Monday night.
According to the complaint, the woman met Pehlivan for the first time on the evening of May 14, at a bar called Kopy’s on Pittsburgh’s South Side. She said that Pehlivan bought drinks for her and her friends, even though she did not know him. The accuser and her friends then left the bar. None of them gave Pehlivan their numbers or addresses.
Details of the Incident
The woman claims that she went home, and fell asleep in her bed, but was later awakened by somebody performing a sexual act on her. She claims that the person in her bedroom was Adnan Pehlivan.
The victim allegedly started fighting with Pehlivan, who she said jumped out of her bed. She claims that she chased him and grabbed his collar, but he punched her to break free, and fled. However, she said he soon returned to retrieve a suit jacket he had left near the door.
According to the complaint, police found evidence that someone may have broken into the woman’s home through a window that had been forced open. Pehlivan was arrested late Tuesday night, and is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, burglary and other offenses. According to police, the victim was able to identify Pehlivan in photographs because she recognized his face as well as the same clothes he was wearing that night at the bar.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
