He was originally from Sri Lanka but had been living in Toronto since 2010. He had some family in the area.

Toronto police believe Kanagaratnam was killed sometime between September 3 and December 14, 2015.

On March 5, 2018, Toronto police released the photo of a John Doe in an attempt to drum up tips to pinpoint who the unidentified victim was. The photo, which seems to be of a deceased man, was found on McArthur’s computer during the police investigation.

Police had a particular challenge in identifying McArthur’s eighth alleged victim, as Kanagaratnam was not officially reported as missing. In addition, there was nothing linking him to Toronto’s Gay Village, which is where McArthur is alleged to have found his victims, some of whom he had a sexual relationship with.

Idsinga said that the John Doe in the photo was eventually identified as Kanagaratnam with the help of an unspecified international government agency.

Toronto police are still working on the massive case, so it’s possible Bruce McArthur may be charged with more crimes as evidence continues to surface.
