An East Cocalico Township police officer was assaulted on Monday afternoon after he was investigating a suspicious vehicle in an Econo Lodge parking lot.
We’ve got everything you need to know about the attack and the officer’s current condition.
A Suspicious Vehicle
An officer was called to the Econo Lodge at 2017 N. Reading Road when the hotel asked police to look into suspicious activities and an ongoing dispute focused on a car in the parking lot.
When the officer arrived, he found that the car, a Chevrolet sedan, was reported and had its windows blocked out by black garbage bags. The officer then approached the car.
Officer Attacked and Charges Laid
As the officer reached the driver’s side door, 65-year-old Gary A. Heisey began to throw punches towards the officer’s head. Eventually, the officer was able to get the upper hand on Heisey and restrained him for arrest.
Heisey, who has no fixed address, was charged with aggravated assault and terroristic threats. As he is currently unable to make the $75,000 bail, Heisey was sent to Lancaster County Prison to await his next court date.
The arresting officer suffered lacerations to his forehead as well as a hand injury. The officer was treated at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital and released. Due to the injuries, the officer will be taking an unspecified amount of time off work.
