Craigslist. It’s used for everything from dating to finding a used couch for your apartment. Unfortunately, it’s also being used as a hunting ground by criminals of all types. From drug deals to stolen merchandise, it’s a dangerously anonymous tool to get certain criminal acts done…even murder.
The following are some of most horrifying Craigslist crimes you’ll come across. Murder and mayhem abound among users of this online marketplace. This article may make you think twice before responding to that ad that caught your eye.
Craigslist Crime #4: Robbery & Murder in Boston
One of the best known Craigslist criminals, Philip Markoff, is suspected of committing crimes against three women. The alleged victims are 29-year-old Trisha Leffler, 26-year-old Julissa Brisman, and 26-year-old Corinne Stout.
All three women had ads placed on Craigslist for services they offered. Leffler was an escort in Boston, Brisman offered massages, also in Boston, and Stout was an exotic dancer selling private lap dances in Warwick, Rhode Island.
Leffler was tied up, gagged and robbed.
Stout was attacked in an attempted robbery.
Brisman was murdered. Markoff allegedly shot her at the same hotel they met up at after he answered one of her Craigslist ads.
Markoff was arrested for all three crimes, but committed suicide in jail before he could be brought to trial.
Craigslist Crime #3: Trickery & Death in Ohio
Richard Beasley is currently on death row for his Craigslist murders.
Beasley posted ads for jobs that did not exist to lure in his male victims. He would use the interviews for the “jobs” on his farm as a way of weeding out the strong, making it more likely that intended victims wouldn’t able to fight back. He would then usually invite them to his farm in Ohio.
Beasley and his 16-year-old accomplice, Brogan Rafferty, would kill the victims and steal what they had on them.
In total, the duo would murder three men: Ralph Geiger; David Pauley; and Tim Kern.
They were caught when a fourth, Scott Davis, managed to escape when Beasley’s gun malfunctioned.
Beasley is on death row and Rafferty is serving life in prison.
Craigslist Crime#2: A Warped & Lethal Attempt at Kidnapping
Korena Roberts had lied to her neighbors, friends, and family for months, saying that she was pregnant. She had posted ads online saying that she was selling baby clothing.
When Snively went to Roberts’ home, she was led to a bathroom. There, Roberts beat her unconscious with a collapsible baton.
She then used a straight razor to cut Snively’s child from her womb. Snively had still been alive at that time, so it was a loss of blood from the incision that ended up killing her.
Roberts hid Snively’s body in a crawl space and called her own boyfriend, saying she was giving birth.
When rushed to the hospital, the baby was declared DOA. It was also determined that Roberts hadn’t given birth recently.
Her plan fell apart and she was quickly arrested. Not found to be suffering from any form of mental illness, Roberts is now serving life without parole.
Craigslist Crime #1: A Serial Killer in Long Island?
Possibly the most chilling crimes on this list are those of the Long Island Serial Killer. Especially since they haven’t found the killer yet.
So far, 10 to 16 murders are allegedly the doing of the Long Island Serial Killer, stretching over a period of almost 20 years.
Many of the bodies were discovered on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach. All of the victims had been strangled to death and a number of them had been wrapped in burlap.
All of the known victims were sex workers who used Craigslist and other online posting sites to advertise their services. It is suspected that the killer had been contacting his victims via these means.
Currently, the last known victim of this serial killer was killed in 2012 or 2013 (there is conjecture on which of the murders was the latest).
The search continues for the alleged Long Island Serial Killer.
